About Monticello Public Cemetery
The Monticello Public Cemetery dates back to the pioneer era. The Monticello Public Cemetery District (MPCD) was formally established in 1936 by residents of Monticello in Berryessa Valley. In 1956, following federal authorization to build Monticello Dam and create Lake Berryessa, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation relocated the cemetery to its present site on Spanish Flat Loop Road before the valley was flooded. The relocated site was built in the same configuration as the original cemetery. In 1988, the Napa County Board of Supervisors took control of the MPCD, with the Board of Supervisors serving as the MPCD Board of Trustees. The MPCD is governed by state law, Napa County ordinances, and oversight by the California Department of Consumer Affairs. The cemetery is a member of the California Association of Public Cemeteries.
