How it works
How Calla works
Calla is a free, independent directory and guide to funeral and cremation in the US. You search your city, compare local providers on price, services, and reviews, then contact a provider directly — we don't sell anything to you, and a provider can't pay for a better ranking.
Using Calla, step by step
Find your area
Search a city, service, or provider — or ask our guide a question in plain English. We only ever point you to pages that actually exist for your location.
Compare like for like
Each city page lists local providers side by side with price ranges, the services they offer, and real reviews, so you can weigh comparable options without calling around blind.
Contact a provider directly
When you find one you like, you reach out to them yourself. Calla is not a middleman — we don't take your details and sell them, and there's no cost to you for using the directory.
Where our prices come from
We publish prices as ranges, drawn from providers' own price lists and quotes and supplemented by national cost surveys for context, and we date them so you can judge how current they are. Prices change, so a figure on Calla is never a substitute for a quote from the provider. Under the FTC Funeral Rule, every provider must give you an itemized price list on request — always confirm a number directly before you commit. Our editorial standards explain exactly how we source and check prices and state laws.
How we rank “best” providers
On our best-of pages, providers are ordered by a transparent Calla score that weighs the review rating, the number of reviews behind it, and price. The ranking is the same for everyone: a provider cannot pay to appear above better-rated competitors. Optional featured listings are always labelled and never change another provider's position.
How reviews work
We publish only real reviews from real people, and we never write, buy, or invent them. Where sample listings appear before real data is available, they are labelled as samples and carry no rating — we never present a fabricated rating as if it were genuine.
What it costs you, and how we stay independent
Calla is free for families, and we keep how we earn money separate from what we publish. You can read the full, plain breakdown of our funding and independence on the About page. The short version: no payment buys a better review, a higher ranking, or the removal of honest criticism.
