Calla covers decisions about death, money, and family — so accuracy and independence matter more than anything. This page explains how we research, what we publish, and how to hold us to it.
Who writes and reviews our content
Guides and explainers are produced by Calla Editorial, led by Calla's founder and editor, Karl-Gustav Kallasmaa — you can read more about him and why he built Calla. We credit real people and never invent individual experts or fabricate credentials. Where a topic touches law or pricing, we rely on primary sources — government consumer agencies and official rules — rather than our own opinion, and we link to those sources so you can check them yourself.
How we source prices
The prices we publish come from providers' own price lists, published rate cards, and direct quotes, supplemented by reputable national cost surveys for context. We present figures as ranges, because funeral and cremation costs vary widely by region and provider, and we date the information so you can judge how current it is.
Prices change, and a quote on our site is never a substitute for one from the provider. We remind readers throughout that, under the FTC Funeral Rule, every provider must give you an itemized price list, and that you should confirm any figure directly before you commit.
How we source state laws
Rules about cremation, burial, embalming, and who can authorize arrangements differ by state and change over time. We summarize them from official sources — state statutes, licensing boards, and federal consumer agencies — and we describe them in plain language without overstating certainty. Because laws shift and individual situations vary, our summaries are general information, not legal advice; for a specific situation, check with the relevant state authority or a qualified professional.
How reviews work
We publish only real reviews from real people. We never write, buy, invent, or incentivize reviews, and we do not let a provider edit or suppress an honest review because they dislike it. When sample or placeholder listings appear before real data is available, they are labelled as samples and carry no ratings — we never present fabricated ratings as if they were genuine.
- Reviews reflect the experiences of the people who left them, not Calla's view.
- We may remove reviews that are abusive, fake, or violate our guidelines — never simply because they are negative.
- Paying for a featured listing does not change a provider's reviews or rating.
Accuracy and corrections
We check facts before publishing and review our cornerstone guides periodically, updating the “last updated” date when we make a substantive change. If we get something wrong, we want to know. Email hello@withcalla.com and we'll investigate, correct any error promptly, and note meaningful corrections where appropriate.
Independence and how we're funded
Calla is independent and not affiliated with any funeral home or cremation provider. Our editorial judgments — what we recommend, how we rank, what a review says — are kept separate from how we earn money. Advertising and featured listings are labelled, a basic listing is always free, and no payment can buy a better review, a higher ranking over better-rated competitors, or the removal of honest criticism. You can read the full breakdown of our funding on the About page.
Not professional advice
Everything on Calla is for general information only. It is not legal, financial, medical, or tax advice, and it cannot account for your specific circumstances. For decisions that need it, consult a qualified professional or the relevant authority.
