It’s one of the most common questions families ask, and the answer surprises people: government health programs largely don’t pay for funerals. But there are important exceptions worth knowing.

Medicare: no funeral coverage

Medicare is health insurance for people who are living. It does not pay for funeral, burial, or cremation costs. There is no Medicare funeral benefit. Medicaid: not a payout, but key exemptions

Medicaid doesn’t pay funeral bills either, but it shapes funeral planning in two important ways for people spending down assets to qualify:

  • Irrevocable funeral trusts / prepaid plans. Money moved into an irrevocable preneed funeral arrangement generally doesn’t count toward Medicaid’s asset limit. This is a primary reason seniors prepay funerals — see are prepaid funeral plans worth it.
  • Burial fund and burial space exemptions. Most states let you set aside a limited amount (often around $1,500) in a designated burial fund, plus certain burial spaces and items, without it counting as a resource. Limits and rules vary by state.
