Writing an obituary
- What should an obituary include?
- At minimum: the person's full name, age, and place and date of death. Most also include date and place of birth, a short summary of their life and work, who they're survived by, and the funeral or memorial service details. Keep it factual and warm.
- How much does it cost to publish an obituary?
- Online obituaries on funeral-home or memorial sites are usually free. Newspaper obituaries are often charged per line or per word and can run from under a hundred to several hundred dollars depending on length and the paper's circulation. Ask the funeral home — they often handle submission for you.
- Is anything I type saved?
- No. The details you enter are used only to generate the draft and are not stored. Always proofread names, dates, and survivors carefully before publishing.
