Headstone cost estimator
Headstones and grave markers vary enormously in price. Choose a type and material to see a realistic national range before you talk to a monument dealer.
Common questions
- How much does a headstone cost?
- A simple flat granite marker often runs $300–$1,200. An upright granite headstone is typically $1,000–$4,000, and a companion monument for two can be $2,000–$7,000. Material, size, engraving, and the cemetery's setting fee all move the price, so the same stone can cost noticeably more in one cemetery than another.
- Why does the cemetery charge a separate fee?
- Most cemeteries charge a setting or installation fee to place and secure the marker on a foundation, separate from what the monument itself costs. Many also restrict the type, size, and material of marker allowed in a given section — confirm those rules before you order, because a stone that doesn't meet them can't be installed.
- Is a flat marker cheaper than an upright headstone?
- Yes. Flat, lawn-level markers use less stone and are simpler to install, so they're the most affordable option — and many newer 'memorial park' cemeteries require them for uniform appearance. Upright tablets, slant markers, and full-length ledgers cost progressively more.
- Can I add a second name later?
- On a companion stone, yes — families often inscribe the first spouse's dates and add the second later. Budget a few hundred dollars for that later on-site engraving. It's usually cheaper to plan the layout for both names up front than to rework the stone afterward.
Estimates are national ranges for general guidance only — not a quote. Confirm your cemetery's marker rules and setting fee before ordering. Estimate the whole funeral.
