Eulogy examples
A eulogy is just you, speaking honestly about someone you loved. It doesn't need to be long — two or three minutes spoken aloud is plenty. Below are two short examples for invented people. Notice how each opens with a thank-you, shares one real story, and ends on a single clear note. Yours can do the same.
Example 1 — A heartfelt eulogy for a parent
Sample only. Written for a fictional father, 'Dad / George.'
- Thank you all for being here. It would have embarrassed my father to see a room this full — he never thought he was the kind of man people made a fuss over. He was wrong.
- Dad measured his life in small, steady kindnesses. He was the one who showed up early to set out chairs and stayed late to stack them. He taught me to change a tire, balance a checkbook, and apologize first. He wasn't a man of big speeches; he was a man of showing up, every single time.
- There's a hole now where his quiet used to be. But I keep catching myself doing things the way he taught me — and I think that's how he stays. So tonight, do something the way someone you love taught you to. That's where Dad will be. Thank you.
Example 2 — A warm eulogy for a friend
Sample only. Written for a fictional friend, 'Priya.'
- I met Priya twenty years ago when she knocked on my door to return mail that wasn't even hers — and somehow stayed for three hours and a pot of tea. That was Priya: she turned errands into friendships and strangers into family.
- She had a gift for making you feel like the most interesting person in the room. She remembered everything — your kids' names, the book you mentioned once, the thing you were nervous about. She gave terrible advice about romance and perfect advice about everything else, and she laughed loudest at her own jokes.
- Losing her feels unfair, because the world is plainly better with her in it. So let's keep a little of her going: call the friend you've been meaning to call. Stay the extra hour. Knock on the door. That was Priya's whole secret, and it's a good one to inherit.
