Ullrey Memorial Chapel was founded in 1942 by Sutter County Sheriff Bert M. Ullrey and his son Burwell William Ullrey, who served as Sutter County Coroner from 1942 to 1958. The chapel has operated continuously from its original Downtown Yuba City location for more than eight decades. The founding family held prominent civic roles across multiple generations—notably, Burwell William Ullrey was the sitting county coroner during the catastrophic 1955 Feather River levee failure and was the primary official responsible for managing recovery and identification of flood fatalities. Walter Ullrey joined as a funeral director and embalmer in 1946 and remained active for nearly six decades. A third generation joined in 1970 (Burwell Leigh Ullrey) and a fourth generation in 1981 (Damon Ullrey). The chapel's facility includes a dedicated chapel space, on-site crematory, and private and identification viewing rooms. Among its historically significant holdings is a fully restored vintage Eureka Cadillac coach, recognized as the only known surviving example of that specific model built on a Cadillac chassis and considered a nationally recognized piece of funeral transport history.
