About The Historic Union Cemetery

The Historic Union Cemetery is nestled on a six-acre triangle of land off Woodside Road and El Camino Real in the Redwood City area. Established in the 1850s, it stands as one of the oldest burial grounds in San Mateo County and has witnessed the evolving history of Redwood City and beyond. Though officially closed to new burials in 1918, the cemetery remained in use for years, serving as a final resting place for those who could not afford private plots during the Great Depression. Today, Union Cemetery is recognized as a California Historic Landmark and is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Union Cemetery Association (HUCA) is dedicated to maintaining and restoring Union Cemetery in accordance with National Park Service and California State Office of Historic Preservation guidelines.
