The Historic Union Cemetery

Nestled on a six-acre triangle of land just off Woodside Road and El Camino Real, Union Cemetery stands as one of the oldest burial grounds in San Mateo County. Established in the 1850s, this historic site has witnessed the evolving history of Redwood City and beyond. Though officially closed to new burials in 1918, the cemetery remained in use for years, serving as a final resting place for those who could not afford private plots during the Great Depression. Today, Union Cemetery is recognized as a California Historic Landmark and is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Historic Union Cemetery Association (HUCA) is dedicated to maintaining and restoring Union Cemetery in accordance with National Park Service and California State Office of Historic Preservation guidelines. The individuals interred here represent 16 countries and at least 26 U.S. states, offering a unique window into the diverse history of the region.
