Cemetery · Seal Beach, CA
Sunnyside Cemetery is a municipal cemetery in Long Beach established in 1906 that serves as the final resting place for over 16,000 people, including Civil War soldiers, Japanese Americans interned during World War II, and early Long Beach pioneers. The cemetery is now at capacity and only offers lawn burials, having reached its maximum occupancy with minimal burials per year since 2010.
Sunnyside Cemetery opened in September 1906 and operates as a municipal cemetery under the City of Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine Department. The 13.5-acre facility holds more than 16,000 burials and has reached capacity. Notable individuals buried there include Civil War physician Albert Rhea (first plot sold in 1907), C.J. Walker (first mayor of Long Beach in the 20th century and founder of Farmers and Merchants Bank), and Japanese Americans who suffered internment during World War II. The property was acquired by Long Beach City Council on August 20, 2019, and now operates off interest from its endowment. Only lawn burials are currently available as there is no mausoleum or columbarium space.
