About Sunnyside Cemetery

Sunnyside Cemetery opened in September 1906 and is a 13.5-acre municipal cemetery operated by the City of Long Beach. The cemetery is the final resting place for more than 16,000 people, including Union soldiers, Japanese Americans interned during World War II, and Long Beach pioneers such as C.J. Walker, the city's first new mayor of the 20th century and founder of Farmers and Merchants Bank. The facility reached capacity and now performs only lawn burials with no mausoleum or columbarium space. In 2019, the Long Beach City Council voted to acquire the cemetery after it had faced water and pest control challenges.
