About Sherman School cemetery
Sherman Indian High School was founded by the United States Government to assimilate Native Americans into mainstream society. From 1901 to 1946, the school operated on a 110-acre farm in the Home Gardens area of Riverside County, California, with property bordered by Magnolia Avenue, Indiana, and McKinley Street, past Lincoln Avenue. Hundreds of Native American children were removed from their homes and tribal cultures, sent to the school to be educated, taught a trade, and required to conform to Euro-American society. The cemetery contains students who died from epidemics, childhood diseases, and accidents at both the farm and main school campus. The museum maintains a Names Project to document and research the students buried there.
