The cemetery was founded following the New Haven Burial Ground model, with governance by a board elected by lot-holders. The initial 5.12-acre property was purchased from the Town Common Council in 1868 and located a mile from town. The cemetery began as a community need-based burial ground without aesthetic considerations or profit motive, developing gradually over time to serve the Santa Barbara community.
