Oakwood Cemetery

Oakwood Cemetery was established in 1879 when Fort Worth pioneer John Peter Smith donated land following the death of his stepson. The cemetery grew from its original 20 acres to over 100 acres and became known as "Oakwood" in 1885. It comprises three distinct sections: City Cemetery (the original public cemetery), Old Trinity Cemetery (historically designated for African American burials), and Calvary Cemetery (established in 1880 for Catholic burials). The 1912 Oakwood Cemetery Chapel, now fully renovated, stands at the entry. The cemetery was designated a Texas historical site in 1966 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018, and operates as a registered Texas Historic cemetery and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to preservation and maintenance.
