In 1880, Archbishop Joseph Sadoc Alemany accepted a gift of land from John and Maria Lucas, dedicating it exclusively for use as a Catholic Cemetery for the people of Marin County. The roughly 20-acre hilltop property was located within the Lucas's Terra Linda Rancho. Mount Olivet Cemetery continues to serve the Catholic community of the North Bay, providing a final resting place for over 14,000 persons. The land has roots in the early settlement of California, with connections to Don Timoteo Murphy, who arrived in California in 1828 and later served as the first Anglo mayor of San Rafael.
