About McDermott-Crockett & Associates Mortuary

McDermott-Crockett & Associates Mortuary was established in 1906 by Charles Stephen McDermott and his wife, Hanora "Nora" Frances Hildegarde O'Leary, who relocated from Chicago to found the business as McDermott Funeral Home. It stands as Santa Barbara's oldest continuously operating funeral home. Thomas Joseph McDermott, born in Santa Barbara in 1915 and a graduate of the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science, carried the practice into its second generation alongside his wife Louise. Following Thomas McDermott's death in September 1969, Richard Crockett assumed leadership, and in 1967 the business formally adopted the hyphenated name McDermott-Crockett that remains in use today. Over its history, the mortuary has absorbed funeral records of several earlier Santa Barbara providers, making it the institutional repository of much of Santa Barbara's documented funeral history. Since 1974, it has maintained a partnership with the Central Coast Memorial Society, a regional non-profit chartered in 1962 to assist families with economical funeral arrangements. The mortuary operates from a historic chapel at 2020 Chapala Street, originally designed and built in 1875 by architect Peter Barber for St. Mark's Episcopal Church, which survived the 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake. The chapel was relocated to its current site in 1932 and designated an official City Landmark in 1982 as a rare and well-preserved example of Gothic Revival architecture.

How much do funerals cost?

The cost of a funeral can vary widely based on factors such as the type of service, casket choice, burial or cremation, and location. According to the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), the median cost of a funeral with a viewing and burial in 2023 was approximately $8,300 (not including a burial vault, which adds another $1,695).

How much does cremation cost?

Similar to funerals, the cost of cremation can vary based on the type of cremation, urn selection, and whether you choose a memorial service. The NFDA reports the average cost of a cremation with a viewing in 2023 was about $6,280.

Is it cheaper to preplan a funeral?

Preplanning funeral arrangements can often be more cost-effective than arranging a funeral at the time of need. This is because you can lock in current prices and avoid future price increases. Additionally, prepaid funeral plans allow you to spread out payments over time, making it easier to manage financially.

How can I pay for a preplanned funeral?

Altogether offers flexible payment options for preplanned funerals. You can pay in full with cash or a credit card or spread out the cost over time with a convenient installment plan.

Will my plans be able to be changed after I pass?
