Frequently asked questions

Are you family-owned?

Yes, Lowest Cost Cremation & Burial has been family-owned and operated for over 15 years. We do NOT have corporate shareholders to answer to and the money stays within our community.

Do all funeral homes own their own crematory?

No, most funeral homes do not own their own crematory. We do have our own privately owned crematory. This is important because your loved one stays with us the entire time and it is our staff that handle every aspect of caring for you and your family from place of death to returning the cremains to you. When a funeral home does NOT have a crematory, they must drive your loved one across town to a shared crematory and wait their turn, often picking up urns weeks later.

How long does the whole process take for cremation (until the urn is in my possession)?

The whole process takes on average 7-10 business days from the time we get paperwork completed. This timeframe can fluctuate depending on response time of the Doctor and Health Department, involvement of the Coroner regarding the cause of death, county where the death occurred, and family dynamics (we are required by law to obtain over 50% of legal next of kin authorization).

Can you mail cremated remains?

Yes, we can ship remains anywhere in the U.S. via USPS Priority Express.

May I separate the cremains (cremated remains)?

Yes. Families do this all the time. There is a fee we charge to do so as it takes time of a funeral arranger to handle this task.

What do the Health departments typically charge for a death certificate?

Most counties in California charge $24 for each Death Certificate, although some do charge up to $26. There is also a $12 fee for each permit issued as well.

Can I order additional death certificates later?

Yes, after the initial order, legal next of kin can purchase additional certified copies directly from the county Health Department.

Can I get extra Death Certificates on my own at any time?

Yes. Once the Death Certificate is given final authorization then legal next of kin can go to the Health Department to purchase official (Certified) copies of their own. The fee is the same that the funeral home charges. It is against the law for funeral homes to charge extra for these documents.

What happens if they die with hospice at home?

The first call a family should make when a death occurs at home under hospice care is to the hospice provider. They will send one of their nurses to do the official pronunciation of death and when they are finished with their work either they, or the family can call the funeral home to initiate the transfer of their loved one to the funeral home.

If death at home, who do I call?

With no hospice involved the first call needs to be to 911 to report the death and they will send a first responder out to the home. The responders will contact the Coroner and once they are able to decide that the Coroner does not need to be involved then the family will be able to call the funeral home. In these situations, it is very important that the family has the name and contact information of the Primary Care Physician.

If someone dies at the hospital?

Most hospitals do NOT allow funeral homes to come up to the floor. They do not want to draw attention to a death on the floor. Contrary to popular belief, most hospitals do not contact the funeral home on your behalf, even if you filled out paperwork naming a funeral home of choice. It is the duty of the family to call the funeral home to inform them of the passing. Typically, hospitals have morgues in their basement which hold the decedents until a funeral home has authorization to pick that person up.

How long does it take to have someone arrive to pick up my loved one?

Response time from time of notifying the funeral home to our drivers arriving is around 60-90 minutes.
