Cemetery · Killeen, TX
Killeen City Cemetery is a municipal cemetery in Killeen, Texas, with roots dating to 1856 as a family burial ground. The cemetery now serves as the final resting place for approximately 9,500 interments and is managed by the City of Killeen, which assumed care in 1950. It offers the Living Tree Program, a commemorative tree donation option for memorializing loved ones.
Killeen City Cemetery began in 1856 as a family cemetery on the Fleming family farm in Bell County. The grounds were formalized as a community cemetery in 1867 when the Fleming family began allowing other settlers to be interred on their land. The cemetery holds historical significance, containing graves of Civil War veterans, a War of 1812 veteran, and a WWII hero (CPT Robert M. Gray), as well as victims of the last recorded Indian raid in Bell County. In 1942, 768 bodies were disinterred from 15 surrounding cemeteries due to the construction of Camp Hood (Fort Hood) and reinterred at the cemetery. The City of Killeen took over cemetery management in 1950. Today, the cemetery maintains approximately 9,500 interments and operates as a public municipal cemetery.
