About Holy Cross Cemetery
Established in 1883, Holy Cross Menlo Park was acquired by the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord and consecrated by Archbishop William Patrick Riordan. The cemetery was originally laid out and landscaped by world-renowned landscaper Michael Lynch. In 1953, Stanford University required the relocation of burials from the site of the first St. Denis Catholic Church to accommodate construction of a linear accelerator, with many reinterments occurring at Holy Cross. The cemetery continues to serve Catholic families in southern San Mateo County, with recent years averaging as many as 100 burials per year and an interment register containing over 5,400 names. Notable figures buried there include attorney John T. Doyle, industrialist-connected Elena Atherton Selby, and Michael Lynch himself.
