Evergreen Cemetery was created in 1858 and is one of the oldest cemeteries in California. Located next to Harvey West Park in Santa Cruz, it serves as the final resting place for the diverse individuals who built Santa Cruz County—including gold prospectors, artists, Chinese immigrants, mountain men, Civil War veterans, lawyers, and more. The cemetery is managed and maintained by the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History (MAH) and a dedicated group of volunteers. In 2014, a 17-foot Chinese memorial gate was installed to honor Santa Cruz's early Chinese immigrants. The grounds are set inside a forested hillside and are free to visit from sunrise to sundown, 7 days a week.
