Except in certain special cases, embalming is not required by law. Embalming may be necessary if you select certain funeral arrangements, such as a funeral with viewing. If you do not want embalming, you usually have the right to choose an arrangement that does not require payment for it, such as direct cremation or immediate burial. If you do not want embalming, refrigeration is provided immediately instead, and is required after the fifth day with a per-day charge.
You may have a funeral service with an un-embalmed body present; however, public viewing of an un-embalmed body is not allowed. Only immediate family will be allowed to view an un-embalmed body for identification purposes, if viewing is possible.
