Not all funeral homes are owned and operated by families. Many have been in the community for years but have sold out to national conglomerates that are publicly traded on the stock exchange. These corporations are responsible to stockholders to continually grow profits year after year, resulting in families paying more while receiving less value. Independent family-owned operations prioritize personalized service.

A Power of Attorney is null and void upon death. The executor or personal representative of the estate takes over responsibility for managing the deceased's affairs. An agent no longer has any authority to make decisions on behalf of the estate after the principal dies.

Social Security pays two types of death benefits: a one-time lump sum of $255 payable to a spouse, and ongoing monthly survivor benefits. If there is no spouse, a dependent child generally age 18 or under is eligible for the one-time lump sum of $255.

The Catholic Church allows cremation but prefers traditional burial for spiritual reasons. The Church requires that cremated remains be kept together and interred or buried in a sacred place such as a cemetery or columbarium. Scattering, dividing, or keeping remains at home is not permitted. While a funeral Mass is ideally celebrated with the body present, a memorial service with cremated remains can be held if necessary.

Cremated remains are buried or inurned in national cemeteries with the same manner and honors as casketed remains. Benefits include a gravesite in any of the VA's 135 national cemeteries with available space, opening and closing of the grave, perpetual care, a Government headstone or marker, a burial flag, and a Presidential Memorial Certificate, all at no cost to the family.
