Memorial park · Cleburne, TX
Cleburne Memorial Park Cemetery is a municipal cemetery system comprising four cemeteries (Memorial, Rosehill, Greenlawn, and Chambers) totaling 109 acres, operated by the City of Cleburne. Cleburne Memorial Cemetery, established in 1873, is a 36-acre historic cemetery with approximately 11,000 burials and contains graves of 278 Confederate soldiers and seven Union soldiers, marked by a Texas historical marker.
Cleburne Memorial Cemetery was established in 1873 on one acre of land donated by B.J. Chambers. Additional acreage was donated over time—20 acres in 1876 by Jeremiah Easterwood and B.J. Chambers, and another tract in 1894 by C.Y. and Ann Kouns. In 1880, the Cemetery Association purchased an additional 20 acres, bringing the total to 36 acres. The cemetery was the third established in Cleburne, created because earlier cemeteries were either full or unsuitable due to underlying limestone formations. Cleburne Memorial is recognized with a State of Texas historical marker and serves as the final resting place for 278 Confederate soldiers and seven Union soldiers, along with veterans of other wars. The cemetery continues to receive burials in remaining family-owned lots and currently has an estimated 11,000 burials with no remaining spaces for sale. The City of Cleburne operates a four-cemetery system: Memorial, Rosehill (established 1867, 65 acres, approximately 12,000 occupied plots), Greenlawn (over 500 burials, originally an African American cemetery), and Chambers (established in the 1800s for African American families, acquired by the City in 1964).
