City of Laredo Cemetery

The City of Laredo Cemetery is operated under the City of Laredo Public Works Department and serves as a significant historic and archaeological resource. The page documents the history of Laredo's burial grounds, beginning with the first camposanto at San Agustin Church during the Spanish period, with early burials dating to circa 1866–1872. A 1997–1998 archaeological excavation revealed more than 90 burials inside the second church (constructed in 1778) foundation. In 1849, a new cemetery measuring 60 square varas was established north of the town and surrounded by a stone fence. A second cemetery, blessed in 1876 by Father M. Souchon and bounded by Scott, Moctezurna, San Francisco, and San Eduardo, became known as the Mexican Catholic Cemetery. The cemetery is designated a State Archaeological Landmark under the Antiquities Code of Texas, and the site receives funding for historic preservation through grants from the National Park Service administered by the Texas Historical Commission.
