Centro Espanol Cemetery - Tampa

In 1885, the convergence of the tobacco industry, railroad expansion, and political upheaval in Cuba transformed Tampa from a small village into a thriving community. Spanish immigrants from Cuba and Sicily arrived by the hundreds and thousands to work in the cigar factories. Five years after the first cigar was produced in 1886, a group of Spanish men founded the Centro Español de Tampa in December 1891 to serve essential needs within the Spanish colony: a place to congregate after work, be entertained in the club's cantina and theater, learn English, access medical services, and arrange for final resting places. Over time, the organization became a lifeline and refuge for the immigrant community, establishing itself as a catalyst for similar institutions (including L'Unione Italiana, Centro Asturiano, Círculo Cubano, and Unión Martí Maceo) that together created a vibrant Latin Quarter and shaped Tampa's unique cultural evolution. The organization's mission today is to honor, preserve, and celebrate the cultural heritage and history of Spanish immigrants who settled in Tampa.
