Any family requesting military funeral honors for an eligible veteran is entitled by law to receive the ceremony. The ceremony includes a detail of at least two uniformed military members, folding and presentation of the burial flag, and playing of taps. The VA has provided forms required to request funeral honors. Beyond disposition benefits, the government provides burial allowances as partial reimbursement: up to $2,000 for service-related deaths after Sept. 11, 2001 ($1,500 before); $300 for funeral/burial expenses and $300 plot-interment allowance for non-service-related deaths. Transportation costs may be reimbursed if the veteran died at a VA hospital or VA-contracted facility or is buried in a national cemetery.
