Any family requesting military funeral honors for an eligible veteran is entitled by law to receive the ceremony. The ceremony includes a detail of at least two uniformed military members, folding and presentation of the burial flag, and playing of taps. The VA has provided honors kits and information for requesting funeral honors with military honors. Burial allowances are also available: up to $2,000 for service-related deaths after Sept. 11, 2001; $1,500 for deaths before Sept. 10, 2001. For non-service-related deaths: $300 for funeral and burial expenses, and $300 plot-interment allowance. Some or all transportation costs may be reimbursed.

Comparison shopping can be done before need arises by visiting homes in person (where providers are required to give a general price list) or by telephone (funeral directors must provide price information). Many homes will mail price lists. When comparing, consider total costs in addition to single items. Package funerals may cost less than individual items. Verify whether the home is independent and locally owned, as many appear local but are owned by national corporations.
