Any family requesting military funeral honors for an eligible veteran is entitled by law to receive the ceremony. The ceremony includes a detail of at least two uniformed military members, folding and presentation of the burial flag, and playing of taps. The VA provides 'honors kits' with information and forms. Burial allowances provide partial reimbursement: up to $2,000 for service-related deaths after Sept. 11, 2001 ($1,500 before); $300 each for funeral/burial and plot interment for non-service-related deaths. Transportation costs may be reimbursed for burials in national cemeteries.
