About Baccus Cemetery

Baccus Cemetery was originally established as the Cook Cemetery in 1847 when Henry Cook, who arrived in Texas in 1845 as a member of Peters Colony, buried his son Daniel on family land. Henry Cook's daughter Rachel Cook Baccus deeded the cemetery land to Henry Cook's heirs in 1878 and also donated adjoining land for construction of the Baccus Christian Church Sanctuary. The cemetery was renamed Baccus Cemetery around 1915 in recognition of Rachel's contributions. The cemetery contains approximately 285 marked graves representing families descended from Henry Cook (including Cook, Heustis, Martin, Dudley, Baccus, Miller, Bishop, and Pearson families) as well as neighboring families. According to the site, burial sites are reserved for relatives of those already interred on the grounds.
