What is repast?

By Karl-Gustav Kallasmaa

Published July 2026

A repast is the meal or reception held after a funeral or memorial service, where family and friends gather to eat, share memories, and comfort one another. Also called a funeral reception or, in some traditions, a mercy meal, it may be held at a home, a place of worship, or a restaurant.

The repast offers a gentler, informal time to connect after the formality of the service. Food is often provided by the family, the congregation, or a caterer.

There are no fixed rules — a repast can be a simple gathering with coffee and sandwiches or a full catered meal, depending on the family's wishes and traditions.
